As consumers and regulators demand greater transparency, businesses are increasingly making claims related to origin, sustainability, or certification. GS1 standards help link these claims to verifiable data. Whether through GS1 Powered QR codes or linked data registries, GS1 enables digital proofs of compliance, origin, and sustainability claims-reducing fraud and improving trust in what’s on the label.

Examples
  • GS1 Digital Link with certificate verification

  • Farm or factory (facility) credentials traceable via Global Location Numbers (GLNs)

  • Verifiable credentials exchange – using W3C standards

National Impact

GS1 standards play a critical role in supporting Australia’s digital trade ambitions and ensuring product claims are trusted across borders. Through partnerships with testing, inspection, and certification bodies, GS1 enables the digital exchange of verifiable product credentials-helping exporters meet international conformity requirements and ensuring imports comply with Australian standards.

These capabilities directly support mutual recognition agreements (MRAs) and national strategies aimed at streamlining trade documentation and reducing regulatory friction. Independent modelling shows that GS1-enabled traceability and verification systems contribute to a 0.9–1.3% uplift in exports, equivalent to $9–16 billion in trade gains annually, by enhancing supply chain trust and removing data-related barriers to market access.
