Description:

Free text assigned by the manufacturer to describe the production variant. A production variant occurs when information regarding the product composition of product changes, this could be due to changes in ingredients, allergen declaration or product reformulation.

A product variant description typically relates to the batch number in which the product composition changes started to take effect. A product variant description should therefore be the batch number itself or potentially a Use By or Best Before Dates related to the batch number.

A product variant description is effective when it can be found printed on the product label (such as batch, best before, use by dates).

Some food manufacturers use an artwork ID to identify changes to the physical product label arising from a change in product composition, this artwork ID could be used as a production variant description if printed on the product label and must be easily identifiable by the consumer.
