Reverse Logistics

Streamlining the return and recall of products in the supply chain

Reverse logistics is often overlooked, in favour of order fulfilment and forward logistics. Suppliers and retailers are typically unaware of a product return until it turns up on their doorstep. Not having visibility of returns can be operationally challenging and costly.

GS1 can help

GS1 standards streamline and optimise your reverse logistics. Tracking each individual item across the returns process, delivering granular cost insights, improved consumer safety, supply chain efficiency, data visibility and reclaiming value from returned goods.

GS1 Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

GS1 Lightweight Messaging Standard

Lightweight Messaging Standard for Verification of Product Identifiers allows supply chain partners to verify that a product in their possession is suitable for forward distribution. Manufacturer verification of the product identifier and associated data gives supply chain stakeholders actionable information helping them to determine whether to accept, reject or quarantine a product. This standard was driven by pharmaceutical regulatory requirements in the US and has been developed as a generic lightweight framework that can be used for other sectors including food and in all geographic regions.
