What is the ‘next generation’ of barcodes?

The ‘next generation’ of barcodes is an exciting project we are embarking on at GS1 and by 2027, we expect consumers to see a lot more QR codes on their products. By now, we’re all familiar with the QR code, because during COVID we all learned what they were and became really comfortable with using our phones to scan QR codes. Today, we’re at a point where the QR code has to an extent outlived COVID and become a constant in our daily lives, with almost hald of Australians scanning QR codes each week.

Excitingly, the next generation of barcodes are knocking at our door and GS1 Australia is a world leader in this space! You might already be accustomed to seeing these QR codes (also known as 2D Barcodes) on your fresh produce and meat at Coles and Woolworths, you might’ve even scanned them yourself at a self-serve machine.

But why is this important to me you’ll be asking? Well, as a consumer, your decision-making process is going to be made much easier as you gain greater visibility over what you buy. You’re going to be able to use your mobile phone to scan the barcode and get all sorts of information about the product, from standard nutritional information, allergen warnings, and expiration dates to recipe ideas, the path of the product to your plate and more, the possibilities are endless. Ultimately, it’s going to help you make really good choices about the products you buy, because suddenly you have all the information you need at your fingertips, with a single scan.
