Transition to a Circular Economy

Action: Supporting Recycled Materials Traceability with GS1 Standards

Transition to a Circular Economy header
Overview / Executive Summary

GS1 Australia is supporting the Australian Government’s shift toward a circular economy by helping shape and guide the national framework for recycled content traceability. This work supports DCCEEW’s recycled plastics traceability initiative and aims to ensure that global supply chain standards underpin sustainable resource use, digital innovation, and market access.

Background / Context

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is developing a national traceability framework for recycled materials. Traceability is critical to validating environmental claims, promoting consumer confidence, and supporting domestic and international regulatory compliance. GS1’s global standards are recognised for enabling transparent, interoperable data exchange across complex supply chains.
