Many solutions claim to use global data standards, but how can you be sure? GS1 is assisting members, industry and government to verify solution provider claims regarding the use of GS1 Standards. via the Traceability Solution Validation Program.
This program is available to GS1 members, organisations and solution providers that offer traceability solutions to the Australian marketplace and its industry
Solution validation helps verify and evidence that their traceability solution adheres to and complies with the GS1 System and GS1 Traceability Standards.
Solution providers may wish to have GS1 Standards use claims for more than one solution validated.

Solution validation is a two-stage process commencing with voluntary and no-cost self-assessment by the solution provider. The self-assessment is completed by the solution provider and analyses how well the traceability solution adheres to and complies with the GS1 System and GS1 Traceability Standards for the purpose of internal and external Item Traceability
The self-assessment involves four steps
Step 1 - registration of the solution (in the national traceability solutons register) and ‘opt-in’ for self-assessment and valuation
Step 2 – initial GS1 Australia discussion/briefing with the solution provider and commence the self-assessment – via form processing (forms/document exchange)
Step 3 – Submitting the assessment for review by the GS1 Standards Team
Step 4 – Review and release results of the self-assessment – with comments and recommendations by the reviewers
Validation is an additional process that involves verification that the solution functions in accordance with the solution provider claims.
Validation provides traceability solution users with improved clarity and objective qualification that solution provider claims about GS1 standards use are sound and defensible. This may assist solution users with due diligence and shortlisting purposes.
Solution providers also benefit from the self-assessment and validation process. The self-assessment results provide clarity regarding strengths and opportunities for improvements to enhance the capabilities of the traceability solution. The self-assessment and validation process provides guidance and a roadmap to GS1 Traceability Standard enhancements that may assist develop solution capability and maturity for users requiring standards-based systems.
The validation process will be continually improved to support the evolving needs of GS1 Members and Industry.
