GS1 Australia is governed by an independent Board and Council, consisting of 15 representatives from various trade and industry associations, including major retailers and manufacturers.

Our board members' diverse experiences and skills are invaluable when it comes to determining and reviewing strategy, annual operational plans and budgets, and ensuring proper audit functions and legal compliance. Their hands-on, current industry experience is vital. 

Our board includes executives from several Australian and international companies, from a large cross-section of Australian industry associations.

Maria Palazzolo  
Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer 

Maria joined GS1 Australia in 1983, not long after it was founded. During her time with the organisation, Maria has been responsible for successfully implementing global standards for eCommerce applications within many companies in different industry sectors throughout Australia.

Maria has also been responsible for producing many industry specifications as well as collaborating on the introduction of eCommerce strategies in a range of industry sectors including defence and government.

Her extensive work with organisations such as the Australian Retailers Association, Australian Industry Group, National Association of Retail Grocers Australia, Australian Food and Grocery Council, Logistics Association of Australia and the Australian Industry Information Association gives her a wealth of experience in all aspects of supply chain management and technology development.

Maria has held the position of CEO since 2002. 


Mark Fuller 
Chief Operating Officer & Deputy CEO

Before joining GS1 Australia in 1999, Mark worked with BHP for over twenty years, and held senior roles in operations, logistics, sales and marketing. At BHP, Mark led the implementation of leading supply chain solutions including one of Australia's first corporate eCommerce gateways.

Mark's role at GS1 Australia is to collaborate with industry and government to create greater awareness and utilisation of the GS1 system of global standards, as an enabler for improving supply chain management. As well as managing day-to-day operations, Mark is also responsible for the growth and development of GS1 Australia's suite of products and services.  


Steven Pereira
Chief Information Officer

Steven has been with GS1 Australia since 1996. He has held high-level managerial positions within the organisation including GM Member Services, GM eCommerce Development and Head of the GS1 Institute which he held for three years prior to July 2016 while also Chief Information Officer.

His current responsibilities, a role he has held since 2005 include overseeing a team of IT professionals in Business Solutions, ICT, the ePMO and Digital Workplace & IT Governance. The practice of Change Management, Research & Innovation and Cyber-Security are also key aspects of the GS1 IT practice.

Prior to joining GS1 Australia, Steven spent seventeen years with Coles Myer.

In addition to his involvement at GS1, Steven is a Victorian Branch Executive Member of the ACS (Australian Computer Society). He sits on various tertiary institutions’ industry advisory committees. He has contributed to various published research papers.

Steven has also spoken at various local, international and academic conferences and has been involved at a global level in the GS1 standards development process including various GS1 projects.  


Colin Barnes
Chief Financial Officer & Corporate Governance

Colin Barnes joined GS1 Australia in 2001. Prior to joining GS1 he worked in the film and television production industry for ten years and held chief financial officer and company secretarial positions. He has also held senior financial roles with Bosch, Philip Morris, and Costain. He is a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA).

As Chief Financial Officer, Colin's responsibilities include finance, legal and risk management. Colin is also the Company Secretary of GS1 Australia.
