ACT Health win global GS1 healthcare award for best implementation of GS1 standards

For immediate release Tuesday 24 October 2017 – ACT Health won the ’GS1 Healthcare Best Provider Implementation Case Study Award‘ at the Global GS1 Healthcare Conference in Chicago recently.

This award recognises ACT Health’s significant achievements in improving care within the ACT through collaboration and implementation of GS1 standards. Specific recognition includes the development of an interoperable standards framework that supports safer more sustainable care and processes for patients, and their successful implementation of ‘Positive Patient Identification’ within the clinical setting to remove risk of errors.

The awards are organised by the GS1 Healthcare Provider Advisory Council (HPAC), which consists of key decision makers and early adopters of GS1 standards in the global healthcare industry.

“ACT Health and The Canberra Hospital have worked hard to find the best ways to support our clinical teams. It is great to see our teams recognised for the work they have done to develop this framework, which will also be used for future systems to better support core processes, patient flow and clinical practices,” said Peter O’Halloran, Chief Information Officer for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Health Directorate.

“Adopting GS1 standards as part of the framework that links our systems and data allows us to deliver significant safety improvements, particularly in the use of barcodes for Positive Patient Identification (PPID). PPID ensures the care provider, patient and instance of care are captured in a consistent way across the entire hospital.

“With our framework, solutions that minimise patient risk, improve real-time data capture and ensure accuracy of records, are now more possible,” added Mr O’Halloran.

The use of GS1 standards for PPID and the guidance provided by ISO TS18530, have enabled significant benefits in reduction of errors within the pathology eOrders and collection process. This same PPID solution can also be leveraged in other key areas such as bedside medication administration.

Catherine Koetz, Manager - Healthcare at GS1 Australia said, “We are really pleased to see ACT Health receive this recognition from their global peers. They took an innovative approach to ensure that all stakeholders were engaged and as a result, have provided the foundations for their digital future within the health service.”

“GS1 standards provide core enablers for ongoing improvements within our healthcare system and are key to ensuring that digitisation of processes is possible. We look forward to continuing to support ACT Health and the whole industry in the interoperable transformation we are currently undertaking.”
