Solutions to Support Industry


As a reflection of the ongoing collaboration and support of the healthcare industry and our members, GS1 Australia has been involved in development and ongoing hosting of several industry solutions. Where a service has been specifically implemented to support Healthcare it is provided by GS1 Australia with governance from the healthcare industry, via working groups led by the Australian Digital Health Agency.

National Product Catalogue (NPC)

The National Product Catalogue was implemented to assist the healthcare industry to support the need for standardised, supplier managed data across the whole of the healthcare value chain. It was initially designed to suit the needs of public health and private health institutions, wholesalers and distributors seeking to purchase medicines, medical devices, consumables and other necessary items for healthcare to run efficiently. The National Product Catalogue in healthcare enables the sharing of quality standard data required to link physical products to clinical practice as well as supporting quality processes & analytics within health.

Locatenet

Locatenet was developed in partnership with the healthcare industry as a means for sharing accurate location information between organisations within healthcare. The Global Location Numbers (GLN) and other key location information it contains provides the foundation to ensure all parties (organisations) and places (physical locations) are able to be clearly identified across the whole of healthcare.  This enables traceability and underpins streamlined business processes such as implementation of eProcurement/EDI.

Recall Health

Recall management is a critical part of the healthcare industry that ensures the safety of all patients and consumers. Recall Health is an electronic product recall management solution that was developed in consultation with industry to support the electronic communication and management of healthcare product recalls. The system allows for recall or withdrawal notifications to be quickly and accurately issued by sponsors in accordance with TGA requirements for therapeutic goods and assists receiver organisations in managing their processes to action and report on their recalls.

eProcurement/Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)

To help automate transactional processes, with the assistance from National eHealth Transition Authority (NeHTA) and the Australian Digital Health Agency, the industry defined harmonised guidelines for trading via electronic messaging. GS1 XML has been endorsed by the industry as the preferred document format for Australia's health eProcurement/EDI solution within hospitals, whilst many Retail Pharmacy organisations utilise EANCOM standard (based in EDIFACT). Regardless of the messaging standard adopted use Global Trade Item Numbers (GTIN) as the primary identifier for products and Global Location Number (GLNS) for parties and places are critical in ensuring interoperability across the industry.

Barcode Check
