GS1 brings Davey flexibility and efficiencies (July 2004)

An automated GS1-based system will replace a flood of paperwork at Australian pump exporter, Davey Products. Davey's pumps are sold in 60 countries and efficient information flow is key to the company's performance. Last year, Davey asked GS1 Professional Services for an analysis of its business practices.
First, Davey's data flow was mapped, including:
- Receiving raw materials and products,
- Raw materials transfer to production,
- Manufacturing and post production,
- Despatch to warehouse or distribution,
- Stock location and picking,
- Loading and despatch, and
- Customer receipt.
The review showed five key changes could reduce costs, improve productivity and remove inaccuracies. Among them were the use of electronic messaging and the introduction of bar coding and scanning. Davey was quick to act and plan to go live with a more automated system in June.
Davey Products' Continuous Improvement Manager, Peter Puts, said the Professional Services report showed compelling benefits for Davey.
"GS1 drew a current map and a future map of all our transactions. It showed us how to coordinate and plan our resources to get more work done with less effort," he said.
