EAN Australia People: Spotlight on John Hearn (October 2003)

While originally an accountant and now EAN Australia's Professional Services Manager, John Hearn likes to describe himself as a bit of a tour guide.
"EAN Australia has traditionally played the role of a travel agent - able to give our members a great deal of advice about the journey and point them in the right direction," he explains.
"Now though, with Professional Services, we can actually take them through the journey of EAN•UCC implementation, more like their personal tour guide."
While a tour guide and an accountant might seem worlds apart, John says his background is perfect for the job. The analytical framework of accountancy, coupled with a love of detail and measurable outcomes stands him in good stead for solving member problems.
Apart from the right attitude, John brings a vast knowledge of the EAN•UCC system to any project. Since he joined EAN Australia in 1997, the organisation has grown exponentially and with it, John's expertise.
Starting as a member liaison officer at the coalface, John progressed to management before becoming responsible for the development of EANnet® and chairing its first pilot with the grocery industry.
"There has been lots of opportunities in my time at EAN Australia to become involved in new developments, such as EANnet and the Professional Services offering. EAN is a great place to work, the real secret is the people who make it fun and interesting, but it also helps that I love what I do and I believe in it," he said.
When asked about life outside work, John says only that he loves spending time with his two young children, family and friends. Oh, and there's the footy - the mighty Kangaroos!
