Extended Labelling
The Challenge
- Consumers are demanding more information about the products they purchase, all the ingredients and the companies who produce them to help them make more informed, healthier and ethical product choices.
- Governments are reviewing legislation around product labelling and the requirements for industry to provide more detailed product information is the likely outcome.
- Retailers and third-party party providers seek to deliver a better in-store and online shopper experience, which requires greater amount of data from their suppliers for both private label and branded products
- A number of third-party providers of smartphone applications and websites are delivering their services to consumers with data being sourced from parties other than the food manufacturer. This data can be inaccurate, out of date and potentially dangerous when referring to ingredients and allergens.
This has led to an increased demand for extensive, detailed and trusted information on food and beverage products in Australia.
The Solution
GS1 GoScan is the first whole-of-industry endorsed iPhone application. This is the result of a three year research and development project involving major retailers, leading international food companies, the Australian Food and Grocery Council, Australian Universities and national health organisations, working in partnership with GS1 Australia. This development included trials which highlighted the potential of GS1 GoScan to influence consumer behaviour and product selection, with potentially important positive benefits in conditions such as diabetes, obesity or allergic sensitivities.
GS1 GoScan provides a whole-of-industry platform for Brand Owners to engage with consumers in this new mobile medium. It delivers trusted, brand-owner-authorised product data to consumers, accurately and in real time!
