Uni Relationships
1. About Victoria University
Victoria University (VU) is situated in Melbourne, Australia. VU believes that a great education needs new ways of thinking to stay competitive in the rapidly changing world.
VU was established as a University in 1990, but its history dates back to 1916 when it opened as the Footscray Technical School. It is now one of five Australian universities to include higher education courses as well as vocational and further education courses.
Three higher education faculties, two vocational education faculties and one further education faculty offer more than 500 courses, ranging from certificates to doctorates. VU has 10 campuses situated in Melbourne’s CBD and western region. Partner institutions deliver VU programs across Asia and in Germany.
All of VU’s onshore courses include on-the-job learning in industry and/or the community. This ensures VU’s teaching stays abreast of the practical skills required in today’s workplace.
The University’s research is noted for advancing knowledge with practical outcomes, and for its innovation in environmental issues, sports and health.
VU has approximately 4500 staff and more than 50,000 students – including more than 14,000 international student enrolments (both onshore and offshore). The University has more than 75 student and staff exchange agreements with education institutions throughout Asia, Europe and the Americas.
2. Collaborative Research with GS1
VU’s Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science has partnered with GS1 Australia to generate a specialised nutrition database that enables mobile phones to scan food product barcodes to access salt and saturated fat content and measure it against personalised medical recommendations.
As an extension to the database, VU and GS1 have worked with Diabetes Victoria to enable those with diabetes to use their mobile phones to calculate carbohydrate content and the required insulin dose for food products and restaurant meals by scanning the barcode labels for these foods.
The collaborative work that VU has undertaken with GS1 further strengthens VU’s expertise in diabetes. The Australian Community Centre for Diabetes (ACCD), an alliance of community partners, is hosted by Victoria University to address a clearly identified need for better health outcomes in the western region, particularly around diabetes.
3. Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science
