What is supply chain management?
In simple terms, a supply chain is the process of moving goods from growers or manufacturers to a consumer. For example, getting food from farm to fork could involve growers, wholesalers, transport companies, processors, warehousing companies and retailers. A network of these businesses work together to get the raw material from the grower, process it to create a product and sell it to the consumer.
Managing the chain of events in this process is supply chain management. Effective management must coordinate all the different pieces of this chain to move the product as quickly as possible without losing any of the quality or customer satisfaction, while keeping down costs.
What does GS1 Australia have to do with supply chains?
GS1 Australia promotes best practice supply chain management through the use of the GS1 System. This is a system of global standards for accurate identification and communication of information about products, assets, services and locations. It is the most widely-used supply chain standards system in the world.
GS1 Australia training programs explain this system and how it is used to manage supply chains around the world.
