What are GS1 standards?
GS1 was established by industry for industry and is industry-governed.
Industry drives the use of the GS1 standards as well as their development. The GS1 global standards foster cooperation and encourage information-sharing worldwide.
GS1 Australia - the global language of business
GS1 global standards provide for the unique identification of all trade items, services, logistic units, consignments, assets, documents, relationships, parties and locations at any point in the supply chain. This set of global standards is called the GS1 System.
The GS1 System is founded on a common set of globally recognised identification numbers called the GS1 Identification Keys, along with the ability to encode Attribute Data (eg Serial numbers, Best Before dates, Batch Numbers)
Identification is the foundation of the GS1 System and is communicated via a barcode, an EPC/RFID tag, via e-Messaging and/or within a network. Using identification helps to facilitate efficient management of a supply chain. The four key areas of the GS1 System are:

Global data and application standards for Barcodes that use the globally recognised GS1 Identification Keys (Identification Numbers) to uniquely identify things such as trade items, locations, logistic units, and assets. |
![]() |
Global standards for Electronic Business Messaging that allow rapid, efficient and accurate automatic electronic transmission of agreed business data between trading partners. |

The Global Data Synchronisation Network™ (GDSN) is an automated, standards-based, global environment that enables secure and continuous data synchronisation, allowing all partners to have consistent item data in their systems at the same time. |

GS1 EPCglobalstandards enable globally-unique identification numbers to be used for RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), with major benefits in the tracking and tracing of products, services and other items in supply chains. EPC is the abbreviation for the Electronic Product Code. |
GS1 Australia is a Member Organisation of GS1, based in Brussels, and is under exclusive licence to administer the GS1 System in Australia (including EAN/UPC Barcodes) for the benefit of Australian industry and business.
