Global Product Classification Standard
The Global Product Classification (GPC) is part of the GS1 System
and a key enabler for
GS1 Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN)
and category management. All current published GPC content is available free of charge, without any usage restrictions.
The three business objectives of the GPC are:
- To support buying programs by allowing buyers to pre select groups of applicable products
- To provide a common language for category management, thus speeding up the ability to react to consumer needs
- To be a key enabler of the GDSN
GPC is a standard that identifies a category (with the brick code as a key) incorporating trade items that serve a common purpose, are processed to similar methods, used and applied in a similar manner; are of a similar form and material; share the same set of category attributes (brick attributes) and that category belongs to a hierarchy (segment, family and class). GPC enables trading partners to communicate more efficiently and accurately throughout their supply chain activities. Classification codes are necessary for effective searching of products and services, for identifying where expenditures are made, and for promoting products to potential buyers in the GDSN.
