Barcodes
What is a barcode?
A barcode represents numbers and letters (data) in a machine-readable format. Depending on the barcode chosen, they can be in the form of bars and spaces of different widths, or represented using dots and spaces. The data encoded in the barcode can identify products, cartons, assets, documents, logistic units and relationships, also known as identification numbers. A scanner is required to decode the information which is then sent to a computer system where it is interpreted and processed.
How do I know which sort of barcode I need?
The GS1 System provides several types of barcodes. The sort of barcode you need will depend on what you require it for – eg. general retail, general distribution, regulated healthcare retail. Printing conditions, materials and scanning environments would also need to be considered.
While we provide a summary of all the GS1 Barcodes on this website, we recommend that you review the GS1 Australia User Manuals or our Fact Sheets. Alternatively, you can contact GS1 Australia on 1300 BARCODE (1300 227 263) or via email if you require further assistance.
