Allocating barcode numbers
GTIN-8
GS1 Australia follows strict application guidelines when approving and issuing GTIN-8
identification numbers.
Before application, all efforts must be made to incorporate an GTIN-13
identification number and barcode onto product packaging. If there is no possible way to alter packaging design to accommodate EAN-13 barcode, an GTIN-8 identification number can be applied for.
When applying to GS1 Australia for an GTIN-8 identification number, it is necessary to provide:
- A sample of the complete product and either the actual size label or the artwork
- A complete list of every product requiring an GTIN-8 identification number
- Written justification as to why the product should be allocated an GTIN-8 identification number
- When you have applied for an GTIN-8 identification number and your request has been approved, GS1 Australia will allocate you the complete number, including the Check Digit
- An GTIN-8 identification number consists of the GS1 prefix (two digits), company/item reference (five digits) and a Check Digit.
