How EPC / RFID works
This section gives you a pictorial presentation on how EPC RFID technology works. Having understood the system basics in the previous section, here you will learn about how EPC technology is applied in a real world supply chain business application.
Step 1
The RFID tag carries the EPC number as its identity.
Step 2
The tag is now attached and associated to a product/package (which can be a pallet, case, carton, use pack or an individual item) in a manufacturing plant. In the example below a EPC RFID tag is being applied to an individual item and is then packed into a case. The case is also assigned and the EPC number and tag applied, thus enabling the identification of not only the individual item but also the case in which it is contained.

Step 3
Now the tag can be read by the RFID readers that are strategically placed in any of the supply chain infrastructure. This shows a typical dock door shipping scenario equipped with RFID readers. The information is then processed by the EPC-ALE Middleware and is passed into the EPC-IS through the EPC network.

The information is now registered in the EPC-IS database of the manufacturer or the supplier. This depends on when and where the product is tagged in the supply chain. The EPC-IS address of the tag is registered in the Object Naming Service (ONS) within the EPC Network provided by EPCglobal. The service is operated in association with Verisign.

You can allow any of your trading partners access to this highly secured information through their application.
