What is Upstream
The term "upstream", when used in a supply chain context, refers to the relationships between manufacturers and their raw materials and packaging suppliers. "Upstream" is thought of as being closer to the source of supply chain items, on their way further 'downstream" to retail and end consumption.
The Global Upstream Supply Initiative (GUSI) Upstream Integration Model (UIM) uses GS1 standards and a standard process model, to define the upstream integration of both process and IT systems, to enable upstream integration that is scalable and of benefit to all participants.
GUSI was formed to address these challenges as shown below.
