1. Background
The trading environment for the Outdoor and Leisure sector is not unlike many other consumer goods industries. Being efficient in every day business activities can make the difference between staying in business or going out of business. Making sure your organisation is part of an efficient supply chain will make an integral positive difference to the bottom line of your business; whether you are a retailer, a distributor, wholesaler or manufacturer, taking unnecessary costs out of your supply chain is a wise undertaking.
To this end, key players in the Outdoor & Leisure sector have set up a working group to specifically focus on:
• Improving the quality of barcodes on products that are handled through the supply chain.
• Improving the quality and processes of item master data across the industry.
2. Industry Initiatives
The Industry Working Group's Mission is:

With the release of GS1 EANCOM 2002 all maintenance and development of the GS1 EANCOM 97 standard has ceased and all education and training services are now based on the latest version. GS1 Australia continues to support users of the GS1 EANCOM 97 standard in existing engaged industry sectors.
A new version of Message Guidelines based on EANCOM 2002 will be published shortly. If you are planning an EDI program please contact GS1 Industry Engagement team to discuss and ensure your implementation is aligned with industry direction.

3. I deal with multiple retailers who all seem to have a slightly different EDI documents for the same thing. Are we likely to see a convergence of these into one standard?
Retailers have been using slightly different documents to suit individual business processes. As time has progressed, the standards have updated, and new retailers have started on new versions of existing documents. In reality, it is unlikely that all will converge to the same document standard. It should be noted however that solution providers can assist in translating the different logic into what you may be using, so you only ‘see’ one kind of EDI document.
