1. Background
The use of GS1 standards particularly in the area of barcoding has been in widespread use throughout the Liquor industry in Australia and throughout the world for a number of years. Like the grocery industry barcoding started at the consumer unit and then moved to carton level for warehousing and logistics purposes.
Today, the major retailers are now focusing on implementation in three key areas.
- Barcoding of logistic units. These logistic unit labels contain a unique reference number known as a Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC).
- Electronic messaging to replace traditional ordering methods such as phone/fax, and are progressively engaging their suppliers in a roll-out program.
- GS1net™ a data synchronisation catalogue service designed by industry, for industry, and has been successfully adopted by the Australian Food and Grocery industry. GS1net is a secure, industry wide catalogue that allows trading partners to share real-time pricing and product information, from alcohol content and taxes, through to digital pictures of products.

3. Industry Initiatives
Industry Market Read (IMR)
Early 2008 Liquor Merchants Association of Australia (LMAA) embarked on an exciting new initiative known as the Industry Market Read (IMR).
The IMR has been designed to enable the provision of Wholesale Sales Market in the Liquor Market to participating Liquor suppliers. This unique solution will provide detailed volume and value data across detail product and channel categories key for planning and management activities.
The benefits to be delivered through the IMR include:
- Access to detailed and accurate Wholesale Sales Market data
- Automation of the data provision process for the Thompsons Liquor Guide
- Leverages GS1net, an exiting trading requirement by Australia’s Liquor retailers and wholesalers
To successfully implement the IMR sales data and product information is required. Liquor Merchants association has selected GS1 Australia’s electronic data synchronisation system; GS1net as the single source provider of item data. LMA have been working closely with their members and industry in conjunction with GS1 Australia to make this happen.
Companies are already utilising GS1net as a trading requirement for the major liquor retailers and wholesalers in Australia.

Liquor Industry Forum
In December 2001 GS1 Australia hosted a Liquor industry forum to discuss the area of Data Synchronisation, utilising GS1net. Following on from this forum two industry working groups were formed.
- A GS1net pilot group - formed as an industry representative group, with the aim of adopting and enhancing GS1net to support the retail liquor industry
- A numbering and barcoding guidelines group - formed to create a set of numbering and barcoding guidelines specific to the Liquor industry
Data synchronisation - GS1net
GS1net is a specialised data synchronisation catalogue service designed by industry, for industry, and has been successfully adopted by the Australian Food and Grocery industry. GS1net is a secure, industry wide catalogue that allows trading partners to share real-time product information, from alcohol content and taxes, through to digital pictures of products.
The Liquor industry anticipates that the following benefits as a result of adopting GS1net:
- Improved business efficiency through improved data integrity between trading partners
- Reduced costs associated with master data entry and maintenance and the cost of processing of purchase order and invoice errors
- A single standardised source of accurate item data and other information such as product images and dimensions that will enable more effective shelf space management and warehouse and distribution management processes
- Provides industry with a solid foundation to enhance other eCommerce initiatives and applications
Numbering and Barcoding guidelines
The liquor advisory group released a new version of the guidelines in January 2009 for review. These guidelines contain information on:
- When to change a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) for wine vintages and blends
