1. Background
GS1 Australia is working with both retailers and suppliers in the Hardware sector to drive best practice supply chain principles across the entire sector utilising the GS1 standards. Adoption of the GS1 standards (Numbering and Barcoding, eMessaging and Electronic Data Synchronisation) will bring improved business efficiency and effectiveness for all companies within the supply chain.
The level of adoption of the GS1 standards within the Hardware industry sector has greatly improved over the past 18 months particularly in the area of trade item identification and this has been driven by the activities of the Hardware GS1 Action Group (HGAG).
Electronic Data Synchronisation within the industry sector, via the GS1netâ„¢ data pool, is set to commence early 2010. Several suppliers in the Hardware sector are currently involved in data synchronisation within the Grocery industry sector and have realised benefits to their organisations. Electronic Data Synchronisation is seen as a fundamental requirement for successful electronic messaging.

- eMessaging - to continue the maintenance of GS1 EANCOM® guidelines, and oversee industry adoption of GS1 XML messaging. This group is chaired by Matt Smith, from Bunnings.
- Task Group - a special task group has been set-up to explore the more complex business scenarios that impact all three working groups e.g. Kitting, Variable measure products etc. This group is jointly chaired by Andrew Price and Patrice Chan-Yam.
