1. Background
GS1 Australia is working with both retailers and suppliers in the Consumer Electronics industry sector to drive best-practice supply chain principles across the entire sector. Adoption of the GS1 standards (Numbering and Barcoding, eMessaging and Electronic Data Synchronisation and EPC RFID) will bring improved business efficiency and effectiveness for all companies within the supply chain.
The current level of adoption of the GS1 standards within the industry in the area of barcoding, numbering and eMessaging (EDI) can be attributed to the hard work of the former Electrical Appliances Industry Group, Applie-com. Applie-com developed eight Message Implementation Guidelines (see Information Library for more details) in addition to an Industry Numbering and Barcoding guidelines document. Its original charter having been realised, the Applie-com group was wound down in mid 2007.
2. Key Associations
There are several relevant key associations within the Consumer Electronics industry sector:
Australian Retailers Association (ARA)
For over 105 years, the Australian Retailers Association has been the peak industry body in Australia’s $292 billion retail sector which employs over 1.5 million people.

Consumer Electronics Service Association (CESA)
The Consumer Electronics Suppliers’ Association represents suppliers of a wide range of consumer electrical and electronic products in the Australian market.

3. GS1 Industry Initiatives
CEWAG – Consumer Electronics Working Action Group
In July 2009 key manufacturers, suppliers and retailers in the Consumer Electronics sector with the support of GS1 Australia formed a new industry action group called the Consumer Electronics Working Action Group (CEWAG).
A CEWAG Steering Committee was established to ascertain the key supply chain issues currently faced by the industry, to prioritise these issues and establish working action groups to explore how these issues could be better addressed by the implementation of GS1 standards.
This initiative is supported by companies including:

Bing Lee, Breville, BSR Group (Betta Electrical and Chandlers), Dick Smith, Electrolux, Fisher and Paykel, Harvey Norman, LG, Panasonic, Retravision, Sony, Sunbeam, and Whirlpool, facilitated by GS1 Australia. The Steering Committee elected Shane Harris from BSR Australia Ltd to the Chair and it meets six times a year.
The working action groups will focus on three distinct projects:
- 1. Reverse Logistics The group’s aim is to look at the requirements of the various reverse logistics supply chains needed by the Consumer Electronics Industry and to create an industry standard for stakeholders who are currently all using different processes and formats.
- 2. Master Data Synchronisation The group will develop a business case for data synchronisation in the industry with the view to developing a data set based on global standards that can be adopted industry wide. (More information on Data Synchronisation)
- 3. eMessaging The group will explore the current adoption level of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and the barriers to its implementation. It will also review the current message set for the industry.
Interested parties wishing to join and participate in these working groups please contact Lisa Caponio, Industry Manager - GS1 Australia on 1300 366 033 or via email

With the release of GS1 EANCOM 2002 all maintenance and development of the GS1 EANCOM 97 standard has ceased and all education and training services are now based on the latest version. GS1 Australia continues to support users of the GS1 EANCOM 97 standard in existing engaged industry sectors. | |
