1. Background
GS1 Australia is working with retailers, suppliers and 3PL providers in the Consumer Electronics industry sector to drive best-practice supply chain principles across the entire sector. Adoption of the GS1 standards (Numbering and Barcoding, eMessaging and Electronic Data Synchronisation and EPC RFID) will bring improved business efficiency and effectiveness for all companies within the supply chain.
The current level of adoption of the GS1 standards within the industry in the area of barcoding, numbering and eMessaging (EDI) can be attributed to the hard work of the former Electrical Appliances Industry Group, Applie-com. Applie-com developed eight Message Implementation Guidelines (see Information Library for more details) in addition to an Industry Numbering and Barcoding guidelines document. Its original charter having been realised, the Applie-com group was wound down in mid 2007.
2. Key Associations
There are several relevant key associations within the Consumer Electronics industry sector:
Australian Retailers Association (ARA)
For over 105 years, the Australian Retailers Association has been the peak industry body in Australia’s $292 billion retail sector which employs over 1.5 million people.

Consumer Electronics Suppliers' Association (CESA)

3. GS1 Industry Initiatives
CEWAG – Consumer Electronics Working Action Group
In July 2009 key manufacturers, suppliers and retailers in the Consumer Electronics sector with the support of GS1 Australia formed a new industry action group called the Consumer Electronics Working Action Group (CEWAG).
A CEWAG Steering Committee was established to ascertain the key supply chain issues currently faced by the industry, to prioritise these issues and establish working action groups to explore how these issues could be better addressed by the implementation of GS1 standards.
This initiative is supported by companies including:

Bing Lee, Breville, BSR Group (Betta Electrical and Chandlers), Dick Smith, Electrolux, Fisher and Paykel, Harvey Norman, LG, Panasonic, Retravision, Sony, Sunbeam, and Whirlpool, facilitated by GS1 Australia. The Steering Committee 2011/2012 elected Jeff Calway from Retravision to the Chair and it meets six times a year.
The working action groups will focus on three distinct projects:
- 1. REVERSE LOGISTICS : The group will review the GS1 international messaging standards used to capture returns and develop a set of Australian Consumer Electronics returns messages which when adopted will provide trading partners a standardized paperless process to conduct and monitor returns.
- 2. MASTER DATA SYNCHRONISATION: The group will develop a business case for data synchronisation in the industry with the view to developing a data set based on global standards that will allow unique, accurate and timely master data available to all partners. (More information on GS1net - Data Synchronisation)
- 3. Industry Pilot Project:
In June 2010, a planning meeting was held in both Melbourne and Sydney to introduce the concept and the benefits this initiative would bring to the sector as well as to inform the industry that a pilot project had been approved with a call for additional participation.
The pilot project commenced in early March 2011 and concluded in June 2011. Click to Download the Pilot Project Findings Document.
The project team consisted of the following companies: Betta Electrical, Bing Lee, Dick Smith, Retravision, Noel Leeming NZ, Electrolux, Sunbeam, Sony NZ & Brother
The CEWAG Steering Committee signed off the CEWAG Pilot Project Findings Document and associated Data Set for the Consumer Electronics Industry in September 2011.
The publication of an industry-wide model assures that all retailers, wholesalers and suppliers in the Consumer Electronics Industry can adopt GS1net, comfortable in the knowledge that it is based on open global standards.
Please forward any queries to Lisa Caponio at GS1 Australia.
- 4. eMESSAGING: The group will explore the current adoption level of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) and the barriers to its implementation. It will also review the current message set developed by Applie.com EANCOM 97 (no longer supported) and develop a new EANCOM 2002 message set.
Interested parties wishing to join and participate in these working groups please contact Lisa Caponio, Senior Advisor - GS1 Australia on 1300 366 033 or via email
