1. Background
GS1 Australia is working with both key retailers and suppliers in the Agribusiness sector to drive best practice supply chain principles across the entire sector utilising the GS1 standards. Adoption of the GS1 standards (Numbering and Barcoding, eMessaging and Electronic Data Synchronisation) will bring improved business efficiency and effectiveness for all companies within the supply chain.
The current level of adoption of the GS1 standards within the Agribusiness industry sector has been acknowledged as low, and a number of bar code audits having been completed confirming this.
An Agribusiness Numbering and Bar Coding Guidelines document has been completed and is due for publication in September 2011.
2. Industry Initiatives

Pooling the knowledge and experiences of the Australian Agribusiness industry participants, and following the lead of other global Agribusiness initiatives, the Agribusiness GS1 Standards Group (AGSG) has been set up to help develop, promote and deliver user guidelines, training courses and implementation programs relating to the global GS1 standards.
The Agribusiness GS1 Standards Group is overseen by a representative leadership group (Steering Committee) made up of key retailers and suppliers across Australia. The current steering committee consists of representatives from Landmark, Elders, CRT/Ruralco, Syngenta Crop, Nufarm, Pfizer, Ridley AgriProducts, Pacific Seeds, Incitec Pivot Fertilisers, IHD, Farmoz, Bayer Crop Protection, Sipcam, Titan Ag, and F4F.
The Steering Committee has appointed Greg Bozkewycz, from Elders, to Chair the group and meets monthly.
