Barcode integrity

All over the world, manufacturers and retailers rely on the GS1 system. You can trust that GS1 barcode numbers issued by an authorised GS1 organisation are unique, accurate, and based on current global standards.

Here in Australia, GS1 Australia administers the GS1 system and is the only authorised source for GS1 barcode numbers and standards.

Our Australian numbering system

GS1 barcode numbers allocated to companies by GS1 Australia begin with the prefix 93. Only GS1 Australia is authorised to provide GS1 barcode numbers with this prefix.

Beware unauthorised numbering

Amazon has confirmed it checks to ensure that all GTINs (UPCs) loaded into it's system are authentic barcodes from GS1. It makes the following statement in its seller central area.

"We verify the authenticity of product UPCs by checking the GS1 database. UPCs that do not match the information provided by GS1 will be considered invalid. We recommend obtaining your UPCs directly from GS1 (and not from other third parties selling UPC licences) to ensure that the appropriate information is reflected in the GS1 database."

Unauthorised barcode number sellers potentially undermine the integrity of the GS1 system, create confusion in the market and disrupt the functioning of supply chains in Australia and overseas.

Please be aware that if you obtain your barcode numbers from an unauthorised source, you may suffer losses if you need to re-label or repackage your products, or if your products are rejected by your retail customer.
